Tablet growth powered by new brands, emerging markets: NPD

Shipments of tablet PCs are expected to grow from 72.7 million units in 2011 to 383.3 million units by 2017, according to figures in the latest NPD DisplaySearch Tablet Quarterly report. Driving the demand is the continued solid growth in mature markets complemented by increasingly strong growth in emerging markets. The report said emerging markets are expected to account for up to 46% of worldwide shipments by 2017, an increase from the 36% share in 2011.

Wow,
those parts look great. What other detail sets are you making for the Revell kit and when are they due to be released?
I will be starting the Launchcomplexmodels LC39 LUT kit soon.Once I have finished that I would like to build the shuttle tower.I have the revell kit-How difficult is it to modify the revell kit to fit the detail parts?

iPads For All: One Sales Team's Story

Level 3 Communications just gave iPads to its 1,300 North American salespeople and sales engineers. IT didn't take away their laptops, but it did load the iPads with software to do all the most important things in a salesperson's life: offer price quotes, build and make presentations, send email, look up customer records, check products.

Level 3's sense of urgency is a reminder of just how fast tablets are moving into mobile workers' lives. 2011 was the year of pilot tests. 2012 is the year companies will roll out iPads by the thousands to entire sales and service teams, packing them with purpose-built business applications, not just generic email, browsers, and off-the-shelf productivity apps.

Level 3's service-oriented architecture lets its iPad app call on a number of back-end systems--from Salesforce .com's cloud-based CRM app to Level 3's legacy software for tasks like generating price quotes. Nick Taylor, senior VP of infrastructure and strategy, likens putting legacy apps onto an iPad to putting a Model T on a trailer so it can go 70 miles an hour down today's highways. The SOA approach provides the trailer.

Level 3, which sells telecom and network services, provides iPads with cellular connections so salespeople are always connected, but much of the app also works offline. People can create presentations using standard product content that resides on the device, but price quotes require a connection. Level 3's IT organization did have to include a VPN connection for a sliver of functionality that doesn't work in the SOA model. (It's working to get rid of that.) For security, IT can do remote wipe and disable using AirWatch mobile device management software.

SWS 1: Birds of a Feather: Business Continuity Roundtable Discussions

SWS 2: Business Continuity in a Box

This workshop is designed to take attendees through all of the steps and considerations needed to write their own business continuity and incident response plans. Whether a beginner or a seasoned pro, attendees will learn enough to make this class worth every minute. Instructors are Ron Lapedis and Laura Mosley.

SWS 3: ColourSpectrums Stress Management and Conflict Resolution for Individuals and Teams

This dynamic presentation provides insights and humor while creating the magical language of ColourSpectrums that celebrate diverse personality strengths and challenges. SWS 4: Moving Your BCM Program to a Management System

This presentation will introduce three standards adopted by DHS for PS-Prep in an easy to understand manner and provide what is needed to quickly evaluate a program's management system readiness. Instructor is Lynnda Nelson.

SWS 5: Incident Management Plan Assessment

Learn to use the incident management plan maturity model and the BCP audit checklist developed by PPBI. Discover how recognized industry standards can be used to measure the maturity of plans in both the public and private sector. The checklist will assess your capability to acquire the necessary resources for critical incident management. Instructors are Ken Schroeder, Deidrich Towne, Jr., and David Ziev.

SWS 6: Mock Disaster Exercise: Utilizing ICS for Public and Private Security

Attendees can experience DRJ's popular Mock Disaster Exercise! In this interactive session, participants work together to solve several scenarios using the Incident Command System (ICS). It was another busy week for hactivists attacking the online targets of their ire. This time, hackers under the banner AntiSec appeared to have hacked the website of OnGuardOnline.gov, the U.S. government's online security website, in protest against the much-railed-against legislation Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) as well as other bills regarding intellectual protection. Similarly, the group Anonymous is believed to be behind the distributed denial-of-service attack on Thursday that brought down the European Parliament's website in what is thought to be retaliation for European support for the shutdown of the Megaupload file-sharing site the week before. Anonymous also opposes a treaty being ratified in Europe now called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. That deals with infringement of intellectual property rights. Read More
