"Not only was this the highest attended CES ever, by vendors and visitors, but it was also heavyweight Microsoft's final appearance at the show." 2012 CES Highlights The Consumer Electronics Show is the yearly tech expo that sets the trend for the year, giving us a preview of what is to come in the tech industry in the coming months and years. This year wrapped up in record-setting fashion. Not only was this the highest attended CES ever, by vendors and visitors, but it was also heavyweight Microsoft's final appearance at the show. In this TechTip, I'm covering the Top Five Highlights of CES 2012. 4K TVs: Some would have you believe that the latest trend in HDTV at CES this year was OLED display technology. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) offers a thinner display option for HDTVs by eliminating the requirement for a backlight, something that today's common LED displays require. This is all well and good; a thin TV looks cool, but I'm betting the next HDTV technology that takes off either this year or next, is the 4K display...

The capsule that launched the first American into space more than 50
years ago will soon be moved from Maryland to Massachusetts, before
ultimately landing in Washington, D.C. in 2016.

Freedom 7, the Mercury spacecraft

flight on May 5, 1961, is leaving the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis,
Md., where it has been on display since December 1998. Shepard, who
died earlier that same year, graduated from the academy in 1945.

The Naval Academy announced the spacecraft's pending departure on Jan.
18, promoting the "last chance" for the public to see the capsule on
display at its Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center. Freedom 7 is expected to
leave Annapolis in late February, according to an academy spokesperson.

On loan from the Smithsonian Institution, the capsule is departing the
Naval Academy to be displayed at the John F. Kennedy Presidential
Library and Museum at Columbia Point in Boston, Mass.

"A plan for loaning [Freedom 7] to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston
is being developed," the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum

to "commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of
landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth."
Shepard later became the fifth man to walk on the moon.

Freedom 7's arrival at the library will mark the second time a Mercury
spacecraft has visited Massachusetts. In 2002, Liberty Bell 7, which
followed Freedom 7 into space, was displayed at the Museum of Science in
Boston.

Long-range plan

Like Liberty Bell 7, the JFK Library's exhibit of Freedom 7 will be
temporary.

"The National Air and Space Museum is working on a long range plan for
exhibiting the Mercury Freedom 7 capsule," the museum explained in a
statement. "The plan includes placement of the artifact in a major new
gallery which is expected to open in the museum's Washington building in
2016."

The National Air and Space Museum plans for Freedom 7 to be a part of a
"new Apollo gallery for a new generation

"Apollo to the Moon" exhibition room, which opened with the museum in
1976, the new gallery "will tell the story of the Mercury, Gemini and
Apollo programs, going from nothing to six landings on the Moon in only
14 years — only eight years and two months from Kennedy's challenge
to successfully landing."

The new gallery will highlight artifacts from the museum's collection,
including Freedom 7, while adding "new content for a whole generation of
people who grew up after Apollo was over."

Mercury museums

The Air and Space Museum currently displays Friendship 7, the Mercury
capsule that launched John Glenn on the United States' first orbital
mission in February 1962, in its "Milestones of Flight" gallery. The
museum's annex, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia, has
"Freedom 7 II," the Mercury capsule that Shepard had hoped to fly for
his second flight before the mission was canceled.

Three other flown Mercury spacecraft are on loan from the Smithsonian to
museums around the country, including the Astronaut Hall of Fame

Science and Industry in Illinois, and at Space Center Houston in Texas.

The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center displays the Liberty Bell 7. In
1999, the museum recovered the sunken spacecraft from the ocean floor.

NASA gave Freedom 7 to the Smithsonian five months after it flew to be
the first manned spacecraft added to the National Collection. Prior it
going to the Naval Academy in 1998, the capsule was on display at the
National Air and Space Museum.

26 years ago, today . . . FEBRUARY 28, 1986 . . . STS-51L CHALLENGER lifted off and, 73 seconds later, exploded in a huge fireball, taking the lives of 7 Astronauts, brave American Heroes & Heroines.

President Ronald Reagan's poetic tribute soothed the day's raw emotions.

"The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives," Reagan told a grieving nation after canceling that night's State of the Union address. "We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of Earth' to 'touch the face of God.'"

The first of the shuttle astronauts to die on the job.

Seventeen years later, almost to the day, seven more astronauts were killed, this time at the end of their mission. Instead of booster rockets and freezing launch weather, fuel-tank foam insulation was to blame. The similarities between Challenger and Columbia, though, were haunting. Another multiethnic crew lost, more poor decision-making, an intolerant work culture, drum-beating pressure to launch.

TEXAS STUDENTS TO SPEAK LIVE WITH SPACE STATION CREW

WASHINGTON -- Fifth- through eighth-grade students at Asa Low Intermediate School in Mansfield, Texas, will speak with NASA's Expedition 30 Commander Dan Burbank and Flight Engineer Don Pettit aboard the International Space Station at 11:50 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Media representatives are invited to attend. The event will be broadcast live on NASA Television.

On Jan. 27, the students will take part in a series of activities focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The school also will host a space night to share lessons about space with students. Administrators temporarily have renamed the school "N"Asa Low in honor of the event.

To attend, media representatives must contact Richie Escovedo at richieescovedo@misdmail.org or 817-299-6349. Asa Low Intermediate School is located at 1526 N. Walnut Creek Drive.

Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin arrived at the station Nov. 15. Pettit, European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers and cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko joined them Dec. 23.

This in-flight education downlink is one in a series with educational organizations in the United States and abroad to improve STEM teaching and learning. It is an integral component of NASA's Teaching From Space education program, which promotes learning opportunities and builds partnerships with the education community using the unique environment of space and NASA's human spaceflight program.

ASTRONAUT JERRY ROSS, FIRST SEVEN-TIME FLIER, RETIRES

HOUSTON -- Jerry Ross, the first person to launch into space seven times, has retired from NASA. In a career that spanned more than three decades, Ross spent almost 1,400 hours in space and conducted nine spacewalks to rank third on the list of most extravehicular activity time in space.

"Jerry has been instrumental in the success of many of NASA's human spaceflight missions and numerous spacewalks," said Peggy Whitson, chief of the Astronaut Office. "Not only were his skills and operational excellence key in major spaceflight activities but his expertise and vigilance also helped all those who followed in his footsteps. We are the better for his years of dedication to the corps and NASA."

Ross joined NASA in 1979 as a payload officer and flight controller.
In 1980, he was selected as an astronaut. He and Franklin Chang-Diaz are the only two astronauts to have flown into space seven times. In addition to Ross' spaceflight mission accomplishments, he went on to serve NASA in the critical role of managing the Vehicle Integration Test Office.

"Jerry was equally invaluable leading this critical team, especially through space station assembly, the transition to the space shuttle retirement, and during the initial phases of our future programs,"
said Janet Kavandi, director of Flight Crew Operations. "He was considered a mentor to many he worked with there. We wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement."

Of his seven flights into orbit, Ross flew on space shuttles Endeavour and Columbia once each and a record-setting five times on shuttle Atlantis, including his first and last missions. His first flight was on the STS-61B mission in 1985. His final flight into space was on the STS-110 mission in 2002.

During his seven missions, he assisted in deploying a number of satellites and other payloads. He performed experiments in life, material and Earth sciences, and physics, robotics and astronomy.
Ross was a member of the STS-74 mission's crew, the second mission to dock to the Russian space station Mir. He also traveled to the then-fledgling International Space Station, where he helped connect the U.S.-built Unity node to the Russian Zarya module. On the STS-110 mission, Ross' final trip to space, he was instrumental in delivering and installing the S0 (S-Zero) truss. Ross accumulated more than
1,393 hours in space, including 58 hours and 18 minutes on nine spacewalks.

NASA UPDATES MEDIA TWO SHUTTLE MOVE PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The media photo opportunity of two space
shuttles moving to different locations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center
in Florida, which had been set for Jan. 31, now is targeted for
Wednesday, Feb. 1, and Thursday, Feb. 2.

On Feb. 1, shuttle Endeavour will move from the Vehicle Assembly
Building (VAB) to its processing hangar, Orbiter Processing

On Feb. 2, shuttle Atlantis will be moved from the VAB transfer aisle
into the building's high bay 4. The start of Atlantis' move currently
is under review.

Updates on the moves will be available at 321-867-2525.

Journalists without NASA Kennedy accreditation need to apply for
credentials now by noon Jan. 31. International media accreditation
for this event is closed. Badges can be picked up at the Kennedy
Space Center Badging Office on State Road 405. Media must apply for
credentials online at:

In OPF-2, Endeavour will undergo preparations for public display at
the California Science Center in Los Angeles in the second half of
this year. Atlantis will remain temporarily stored in the VAB.

New Horizons Works through Winter Wakeup

New Horizons might be more than two billion miles from home, but the spacecraft spent most of January at the fingertips of its operators. After a busy month of housekeeping and maintenance activities – which included uploading commands to the spacecraft’s computer, checking the digital data recorders, testing the Radio Science Experiment (REX), and prepping the Solar Wind at Pluto (SWAP) and Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation (PEPSSI) instruments for science-data collection – the mission team has put the Pluto-bound NASA spacecraft back into hibernation.

Principal Investigator Alan Stern leads a mission team that includes the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Southwest Research Institute, Ball Aerospace Corporation, the Boeing Company, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Stanford University, KinetX, Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, University of Colorado, the U.S. Department of Energy, and a number of other firms, NASA centers and university partners. Lightbulbs. Schlieren photograph comparing energy release between three different types of lightbulb. Each bulb produces approximately 1600 lumens of light. The ordinary incandescent filament bulb (far right) is inefficient and requires 100 Watts of power. The compact fluorescent bulb (centre) draws only 23 Watts, while the LED bulb (left) is rated at only 13 Watts. Both the incandescent and the fluorescent bulbs produce significant buoyant thermal convection plumes that are clearly seen under schlieren observation. The LED sheds some waste heat as well, but not by natural convection, it has an internal air-moving device. It also appears not to provide as much illumination as the other two however it is a spotlight that is pointing upwards.
