Shift, Change, Turn: A Year in Music
Composers have been painting the seasons for centuries. Vivaldi gave us the most famous musical portrait of the year, with its storms, birdsong and frost. Tchaikovsky later turned the calendar into an intimate piano suite, The Seasons, with a piece for each month. In 2019, that suite inspired Montgomery's Shift, Change, Turn.
Where Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi paint the world outside, Montgomery turns the seasons inward. The cycles of the earth become a mirror for the shifts in our private and public lives, sketched on a colourful orchestral landscape.

Named Performance Today’s 2025 Classical Woman of the Year, her profound works have been described as “turbulent, wildly colorful, and exploding with life” (The Washington Post), and are performed regularly by leading orchestras, ensembles, and soloists around the world.
